Demand for Wisconsin Soybeans Continues to Increase Around the World
Madison, WI, November 26, 2013—Wisconsin is a major exporter of soybeans. Sixty-five percent or two out of every three soybean rows are sent to other countries. The State’s 11,000 soybean farmers sell their crop to local elevators, like The DeLong Co. Inc., in Clinton. Today, the 100-plus-year-old company has become a major supplier of Wisconsin family farmer grown soybeans serving U.S. and worldwide markets.
Vice President of Grain Operations at The DeLong Co. Inc., Bo DeLong helped to position his family’s Wisconsin business to be one of the largest exporters of containerized grain and feedstuffs in the United States. Containerized shipping currently moves 8 percent of U.S. soybean exports. DeLong says there’s great potential for this mode of transportation to continue to grow and improve.
“Of our containerized exports, soybeans currently represent about 34 percent and soybean meal 9 percent of containers shipped,” says Bo DeLong. “Overall, Asia receives 11 percent of grains and feedstock shipments by containers. Of that, China is the largest receiver.”
According to DeLong, containers have an easier time getting into some markets than a large bulk ship. Containers can often be used to get into markets that have otherwise been unavailable to many commodities because the smaller shipments can be of higher quality products. Also with containers, there’s a more direct supply – farmers are able to ship their product directly to customers. In fact, DeLong’s is seeing an increase in source-loading, where containers are loaded at the country elevator.
