Education Brings Record Crowd to Corn/Soy EXPO
January
31, 2006 – Wisconsin Dells, Wis. – Educational
sessions, an industry trade show and idea sharing are the
top three reasons farmers attend the annual Corn/Soy EXPO
meeting, and a record crowd found plenty of all three at
the Kalahari Conference Center last week.
The overwhelming highlight of this year’s Corn/Soy
EXPO Wisconsin Dells was Farm Policy Advisor Barry Flinchbaugh,
Ph.D., a general session speaker, who related his expectations
for the next farm bill. His humorous yet straight-forward
style and industry insight kept the audience glued to their
seats and prompted an interesting question-and-answer session
following his talk.
Other notable sessions at the 2006 Corn/Soy EXPO included
a luncheon presentation by Green Bay Packer Fullback William
Henderson, a panel discussion on biofuels, an address by
Ethanol Indy Car driver Paul Dana and education workshops
on various crop production topics. A sold-out trade show
included more than 100 agricultural companies displaying
their products and services and served as the focal point
for networking and socializing during the event.
Educational
breakout sessions at Corn/Soy EXPO covered nitrogen management
recommendations, control of corn rootworms, soybean rust
and other disease management, energy efficiencies for grain
dryers, value-added soybean grower opportunities, options
trading strategies, maximizing glyphosate use in crops and
crop insurance. Some of these presentations, and presentations
from the biofuels session, are posted online at www.wisoybean.org
in PowerPoint format.
Annual meetings of the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association
(WCGA), Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board (WCPB), Wisconsin
Soybean Association (WSA) and Wisconsin Soybean Marketing
Board (WSMB) were held during Corn/Soy EXPO. Corn growers
elected to their board of directors Jason Henschler, Beloit;
Mark Schroeder, De Forest, and; industry representative
Charlie Hampton, with Syngenta Crop Protection. Soybean
growers elected two new directors: Tim Goodenough, West
Salem; and Dean Weichman, Lake Mills. New WSA officers elected
at the meeting include President, Robert Derr, Marshall;
President Elect, Joe Bragger, Independence; Treasurer, Andy
Bensend, Dallas; Secretary, Jay Page, Ripon.
